What Causes Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia can occur due to multiple reasons, such as hormonal imbalance, medication, other medical issues or for idiopathic reasons. Men who suffer from gynecomastia often find it emotionally difficult to deal and cope with having female-like breasts. Dr. Ali Totonchi understands the effect this has on a man’s self-esteem and in appropriate Cleveland gynecomastia patients, recommends male breast reduction surgery to reduce breast size to achieve a more masculine and proportional body contour. Prior to surgery, patients might require preoperative workups, including blood tests and sometimes ultrasound studies, which is done by our office or primary care physician.
Male Breast Reduction Surgery Details
Male breast reduction surgery for gynecomastia patients is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Treatment for patients with gynecomastia involves liposuction and/or surgical excision of excess glandular tissue and skin. After evaluation to determine the exact cause of gynecomastia, appropriate surgery is performed by Dr. Ali Totonchi, who will remove of any excess fat, skin and glandular tissue if needed.
During gynecomastia surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali Totonchi removes excess fat by inserting a liposuction cannula through small incisions made in the breast. The cannula will help loosen the fat tissue in the patient’s breasts and will be suctioned out. If excision of the glandular tissue and skin is needed, an incision will then be made on the breasts to remove excess glandular tissues and skin. Gynecomastia patients undergoing male breast reduction surgery in Cleveland may also have reduction of the size of the areola if they appear enlarged; they can also be repositioned for our gynecomastia patients to achieve a more masculine contour.

It is normal for gynecomastia patients to experience slight swelling and bruising in the breast area, in addition to breast tenderness, and in some cases, a burning sensation in the breasts following male breast reduction surgery. Patients are often well enough to go to work and resume their normal day-to-day activities approximately three to five days after undergoing male breast reduction surgery. Gynecomastia patients should expect the swelling and bruising to disappear about two to four weeks after the male breast reduction surgery.
