What Is Breast Lift Surgery?

Breast Lift Cleveland

If your feel your breasts have flattened, sagged, lost shape and volume, or your nipples and areola point downward, you may consider breast lift surgery. Women’s breasts mature over time and lose their firmness and youthful contour. The breast lift or mastopexy procedure raises the breasts by removing excess tissue, and then reshaping and supporting the breast, which restores a youthful, uplifted appearance. A breast lift does not change the size of the breasts, it just lifts and supports the breast tissue that is present. If you have large or elongated areolas, which is the darkened tissue surrounding the nipple, they can be reduced at the time of your breast lift.

Am I a Candidate For Breast Lift Surgery?

Breast lift surgery can benefit many women who feel insecure about their breasts by boosting their self-esteem and making them feel more comfortable with their bodies. Candidates for breast lifts include women who:

• Have flat or sagging breasts
• Want to restore their breast shape after pregnancy
• Have nipples that point downward
• Want to enhance their breasts after significant weight loss

Benefits of Breast Lift

Breast Lift in Westlake Breast lift is the most successful solution for rejuvenating breasts affected by droopiness. Beyond elevating the breasts, Dr. Totonchi can create a rounder and firmer breast shape. By repositioning the nipples, breasts also look perkier, with nipples that point straight forward rather than downward. Women also note that they experience less chafing after breast lift since less sweat gets trapped beneath their breast skin.

Breast Lift Techniques

Dr. Totonchi can perform breast lift using one of a few different surgical techniques. His incision placement typically depends on the size of the breasts and the extent of the sagging.

  • Lollipop Lift: Dr. Totonchi makes a round incision around the perimeter of the areola, as well as a vertical line from the bottom of the areola down to the lower breast crease. This is the approach that Dr. Totonchi utilizes most often.
  • Anchor Lift: This technique begins with a lollipop incision and then adds a horizontal incision across the lower breast crease. Dr. Totonchi suggests this approach for the most advanced cases of breast ptosis.
  • Donut Lift: Also known as a Benelli lift, this technique is less invasive because its primary objective is to reposition the areola, while tightening a small amount of breast skin.
  • Crescent Lift: This is the least invasive approach because the incision is placed along the top portion of the areola only. Accordingly, Dr. Totonchi uses it only to address very early signs of breast sagging.

Breast lift surgery is typically completed in two to three hours. Patients receive anesthesia prior to the surgery to keep them comfortable throughout this procedure. This is an outpatient procedure, which means that patients return home to rest and recover on the same day as their surgery.

What can I expect after breast lift surgery?

The results of the breast lift procedure are visible immediately. The final breast result will continue to improve over 3 months, as the breast shape and position form. You will have an incision around the areola, a linear incision vertically on the inferior portion of the breast, and a horizontal linear scar near the breast crease. The incisions heal within 7-10 days. Scars will continue to mature for a full year after your breast surgery.  Once your incisions heal, scar massage, moisturizing creams and silicone sheeting strips help to minimize the appearance of the scars. Be aware that your breasts will continue to change over time as your breasts age and mature.

You will be given a prescription for pain medication. Pain is variable from patient to patient.  The maximum pain will be in the first 48-72 hours. Most people tolerate breast lift surgery well and feel good 5-7 days post op, and return to work after the first week. Wearing a good support bra/sports bra post op is important.  You may return to your regular exercise routine 6-8 weeks after surgery. Instructions about post-operative care are provided to each patient and can also be printed from Dr. Totonchi’s website.

Can Breast Lift be Combined with Breast Augmentation?

If you desire volume to your breasts, you may consider a breast lift combined with breast augmentation. Breast augmentation can either be done at the same time as your breast lift, or staged, depending on surgeon preference. Details on breast augmentation can be found on the web home page. Breast lift surgery alone or in combination with an augmentation is highly individualized, and Dr. Totonchi can assist you in determining which procedure is right for you. Breast surgery should not be considered until child bearing is complete. Significant weight loss or weight gain after breast surgery can negatively impact the final result achieved.

Is Breast Lift Surgery Safe?

As with any surgery, the breast lift procedure does come with the risk of complications. Dr. Totonchi is an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon and takes all of the necessary steps to help reduce risk, as patient safety is his top priority. At the time of your consultation Dr. Totonchi will discuss the risks with you and address any concerns you may have.

What happens to my nipples during breast lift?

Breast Lift Cleveland As your breasts droop, your nipples will typically appear lower on your breasts and point downward. For most patients, Dr. Totonchi will reposition the nipples so that they have a perkier appearance. If you are unhappy with the size of your areolas, Dr. Totonchi can also resize them so that they are more proportionate to the overall size of your breasts. Be sure to express your wishes for your nipples during your consultation so that can be incorporated into your surgical plan.

How much does breast lift cost?

The price of breast lift depends on the amount of loose skin around the breasts and the techniques necessary to elevate the breasts. Dr. Totonchi can provide a quote after meeting with you during a consultation and devising a unique surgical plan. Financing plans are available through CareCredit, a leading medical lender.

Will breast lift affect my ability to breastfeed?

A small percentage of women who have had breast lift may find that they produce less breast milk than the average woman, but it should not prevent you from nursing your baby altogether. However, the main reason that Dr. Totonchi would encourage you to postpone breast lift until after completing your family is that breast sagging is very common after pregnancy. It makes sense to wait until after your last pregnancy so that you can enjoy the cosmetic benefits for longer.
