You probably know by now that skin aging is hasten through a combination of genetics and degree of sun exposure. Yet did you know that what you eat can actually have a huge influence on how your skin looks like? Here at our Cleveland nonsurgical cosmetic practice, we make it a point to educate our clients about the relationship between what they put in their plate and the state of their skin.
Understanding the Science of Aging
While there is no definite body of scientific evidence that specifically explain what causes aging, what we are sure about is the series of multiple processes that result to signs of aging — one of which is inflammation.
By and large, inflammation is your body’s response to an overwhelming number of viruses and bacteria. When you age, your body’s immune response weakens making way for persistent inflammation. Furthermore, the inflammatory process is hasten with exposure to pollution, chronic stress, sleep deprivation, and of course, poor diet.
So what exactly does a poor diet involve?
Simply put, a poor diet means eating too much refined and highly processed food — from that greasy serving of French fries to that can of soda you drink up post-lunch every day. For your skin to naturally glow from within, we encourage you to consume mostly vegetables, fruits, farm-raised meat, fresh (preferably wild) fish, and whole grains. We perfectly understand that it’s not as convenient to get hold of whole food sources than the ones that are heavily processed but what it does for your skin and overall health is actually worth the extra time and effort.
