An otoplasty or an ear reconstruction surgery is an invasive type of plastic surgery. This means that the procedure involves incisions, downtime, and the possibility of complications. While an otoplasty here at our clinic in Cleveland is commonly done early in one’s childhood, it may seem like a difficult decision for parents to decide on the procedure, granting the complications that come with it.
However, an otoplasty is not something to cower away from, given the benefits that it brings. In fact, complications can be prevented by following post-operative instructions religiously.
Dealing with Infection
Because there are wounds made during surgery, along with it comes the possibility of an infection. Swelling, pain, and redness may indicate that the wound has been infected. If you experience any of these, it is important to have them checked by Dr. Totonchi immediately. Although infection rarely happens, you may still be prescribed with antibiotics to reduce your risks.
Preventing Blood Clots
It is unusual for bleeding to occur after an otoplasty, yet some patients could still experience blood clot formation during the first 48 hours. Regularly have your ears checked by Dr. Totonchi to determine any excess blood that has pooled in the ears. Blood clots can be quickly removed with a needle to eliminate the possibility of ear deformities.
Loosening of Sutures
Sutures are used to hold the ears in their new position. However, the sutures may loosen up or pop, causing the ear to return to their original position. To avoid this complication, the patient should be careful not to do vigorous physical activities and contact sports for some time after otoplasty. Dr. Totonchi usually advises his patients to give it six weeks before returning to their regular activities to allow the ears to fully recover.
It is normal to worry about your child’s operation, yet the benefits of this plastic surgery procedure make it worth the hassle.
