Why Enlarged Male Breasts Are More Than Just a Cosmetic Concern

Enlarged male breasts, also known as gynecomastia, is not primarily considered as a serious medical problem but is actually a common occurrence among male adolescents. In fact,  according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the prevalence of  gynecomastia is quite high: 60% to 90% in infants, 50% to 60% in adolescents, and up to 70% in men aged 50 to 69 years. Here at our Cleveland plastic surgery practice, we pay special attention to adolescents and older men who suffer from abnormally enlarged breasts. We understand that it’s more than just a cosmetic concern for many.

Negative Psychological Impact on Adolescent Males

A study published in the April 2013 issue of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the ASPS, revealed that gynecomastia negatively affects self-esteem and the overall mental health of adolescent males affected by the condition.

The researchers found out that the boys with persistent breast enlargement had lower scores on a standard assessment of quality of life than boys without gynecomastia, including physical health, mental health, and social functioning. It should be noted that most of the boys with gynecomastia have mild to moderate breast enlargement. This goes to show that even mild enlargement itself can have a negative impact on the boys’ self-esteem.
