Whatever your reasons are for having breast augmentation, Dr. Totonchi understands that you still want to look like yourself, except with a better figure. During your personal consultation, one of the things that will be thoroughly discussed with you is the type of implant that will be used during your breast enhancement surgery.

Although both saline and silicone implants can significantly improve the appearance, shape, and size of your breasts, it pays to know which implant type is suitable for your cosmetic goals, body type, and lifestyle. Below is a quick review on when to choose saline or silicone implants.

When to Opt for Saline Implants

A saline implant is actually made of a silicone shell like in silicone implants except that it’s filled with a saline solution. Since its introduction in 1965, a lot of advancements have been made in its design to prevent deflation and leaks.

Saline implants are ideal for you if you have significant amounts of existing breast tissue and prefers a smaller incision to make your scar as inconspicuous as possible. Some women also chose saline implants since they have more natural material than their silicone counterparts. It is important to note though that saline implants are more prone to rippling and don’t feel as natural as silicone.

When to Opt for Silicone Implants

One of the reasons why silicone implants are very popular these days is its natural look and feel than saline implants. Like its saline counterpart, it was also introduced around the 1960’s. However, it was removed in the market around the 1990’s due to safety concerns. After more than a decade of studies by the FDA about its safety, it turned out that silicone implants do not actually pose any health risks. Thus, it was reintroduced in 2006 for breast augmentation and reconstruction.

Silicone implants has less chance of cause rippling. However, ruptures are difficult to detect for these implants and may require a longer incision than that of saline.
