Many women seek breast implants after pregnancy. However, here at our Cleveland breast enhancement surgery practice, there are also women who want breast implants and wouldn’t mind giving birth and breastfeeding in the future. The good news is that you can actually breastfeed without any difficulties after breast augmentation!
It Has to Do with Incisions
If you have plans of getting pregnant and breastfeeding in the future after having breast implants, it is important that you mention this to Dr. Totonchi during your consultation. While the breast implant itself will not affect your ability to breastfeed, the possibility of interference in breastfeeding following breast augmentation has to do with how and where the surgical incision is made. Thus, planning for your surgery, specifically incision type and technique, is crucial.
Specifically, the periareolar incision (incision in or around the areola or that dark circle around the nipples) should be avoided as it has been found out to increase your risk of damage to the milk ducts and its surrounding nerves.
How about the silicone content?
We also receive concerns about the possibility of silicone causing health problems to newborns who are breastfed. By and large, there is no solid evidence linking silicone to possible health risks in children who are breastfed.
