What is an abdominoplasty?
Patients suffering from excess and loose abdominal skin are advised by Dr. Ali Totonchi to go through an abdominoplasty/tummy tuck. Loose skin on the lower abdomen of both men and women is very stubborn and resistant to diet and exercise. No amount of discipline or healthy lifestyle can remove this excess skin for many patients and a slimmer abdominal contour can only be achieved through an abdominoplasty.
A tummy tuck works best for patients who have loose abdominal skin as a result of pregnancy, drastic weight reduction, or as a normal sign of aging. It is important for patients to note that an abdominoplasty/tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss and cannot remove stretch marks completely. Although, the appearance of stretch marks can be reduced if the location of the stretch marks is in the area being removed.
What is the procedure like?
During initial consultation, Dr. Ali Totonchi will provide all the information as well as set expectations for patients. As with any surgical procedure, patients are provided instructions on proper preparation prior to their procedure.
The abdominoplasty procedure done in our plastic surgery facility starts with an incision that is made on the lower abdomen of the patient, usually above the pubic area, and the excess skin and fat is removed. The underlying abdominal muscles are tightened by suturing them together to achieve a leaner appearance. The navel is then repositioned prior to pulling down the skin to remove any more excess skin. Drains are placed under the patient’s skin after the tummy tuck to help collect any body fluid accumulation after the procedure.
What should patients expect after their procedure?
The results for Dr. Ali Totonchi’s patient who have undergone a tummy tuck are noticeable immediately after the procedure and patients appreciate their slimmer and leaner appearance.
Standard post-operative exams are scheduled for all patients about a week after surgery. The wound dressings and drains will be removed and patients are instructed to wear compression garments for a period of 6 weeks to help maintain the results and facilitate the healing process. On average, patients can resume work and their normal day-to-day activities about 2-4 weeks later. Although this may be the case, Dr. Ali Totonchi reminds his patients to take it slow and regulate their activities until they have healed completely.
